After a heated argument with manager Rigobert Song, who reportedly took issue with his goalkeeping style, Onana, 26, was kicked out of the tournament in Qatar. During a training session, Song reportedly berated the Inter Milan shot-stopper for taking too many chances with his feet, which led to an argument between the two.

Onana and Song reportedly had a contentious argument while in training. They sat down and talked after practise, and the goalkeeper emphasised that he was not going to alter his style of play. Song, for his part, emphasized that he would serve as a substitute in that situation, which the goalie reportedly refused to accept, according to the coach.

Following his dismissal from the Cameroon team, Onana was compelled to depart Qatar earlier than anticipated, and his nation was ultimately eliminated in the group stage. Later, he made the decision to withdraw entirely from international service, announcing his retirement from the Cameroon in an extensive social media post.
He wrote: ‘It all started in Ngol Nkok, a small village where, from a very young age, my family passed on to me the values that identify the Cameroonian people. I understood that love for this country is eternal and that commitment is non-negotiable.”
‘But every story, however beautiful it may be, has its end. And my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end. Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player. Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.’ he added.
Throughout his six-year career, Onana amassed 34 caps for Cameroon, aiding them in finishing third at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
