The FIFA Congress is an annual gathering of the 200 or so member associations of FIFA, the organisation in charge of overseeing world football. Representatives from more than 200 FIFA member associations attended the 73rd edition, which was held in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. The following edition might be hosted for the first time in India.

AIFF is anticipated to make a bid to hold the AFC Futsal Asian Cup final round as well as the FIFA Congress in 2024. The tournament is held once every two years, and all of the member associations have already received the rules for the following year’s competition.

The executive committee will discuss a number of topics during its meeting, including a minimum wage for female football players and an institutional league with teams from public sector enterprises (PSUs). Prabhakaran has long pushed for while serving as FIFA’s development officer. PSU teams like Air India, HAL, ONGC, and SBT were constants in the National Football League and even the I-League.

“This is part of the agenda and we will discuss,” said Prabhakaran. “There is a need for minimum wage for women footballers to create economic opportunities for them. Right now, most of them are playing as amateurs. There’s no minimum wage.”

 

Each season, the federation hosts the Indian Women’s League (IWL) and a senior national championship, but there hasn’t been a salary structure like there is in the men’s game up until now. With rising TV viewership and record attendance at World Cups, women’s football has advanced quickly in recent years all across the world.

The PSUs were gradually phased out of the top division when the AIFF agreed to a new lucrative commercial deal in 2010, which included the introduction of a new professional league (Indian Super League) in 2014. Footballers experienced significant unemployment as a result of the PSUs’ budget cuts drying up the sports quota positions.

The executive committee meeting will also cover a variety of other topics, such as the creation of a new grassroots program, the proposal to establish a separate organisation for professional refereeing, the completion of the AIFF’s annual budget for 2023–2024, accreditation of academies, and the proposal to create an audit committee, among others.
