Iga Swiatek vs Qinwen Zheng
World No.1 Iga Swiatek made a winning return to the Hologic WTA Tour with a commanding Round 2 victory to open her title defense at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Swiatek needed 1 hour and 26 minutes to defeat China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 6-4, extending her unbeaten run in Stuttgart to five matches.
Swiatek moves through to a quarterfinal match against former champion and former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova, who outlasted Donna Vekic in 2 hours and 20 minutes, in a third-set tiebreak, to advance to the final eight.
Spain’s Paula Badosa won 6-1 6-2 against compatriot Cristina Bucsa, setting up a last-eight tie against world number two Aryna Sabalenka.
Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 4 seed, advanced to the last 8 of the Porsche Grand Prix by defeating German wildcard Tatjana Maria 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart on Thursday. Garcia, ranked No 5, will face Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
Elena Rybakina vs Beatriz Haddad Maia
Elena Rybakina is eyeing her third successive quarterfinal spot in the WTA Tour. The sixth seed began her campaign at Stuttgart with a straight set win against Jule Niemier in the first round. In the second round, she now takes on Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The unseeded Haddad Maia received a walkover from Martina Trevisan in the first round. Maia was leading 7-5, 1-1 before the Italian retired midway from the contest due to an injury. The Brazilian now faces an uphill task against Rybakina.
