Doha Diamond League LIVE: All eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra as he is set to get his season underway at the Doha Diamond League 2023. India’s Olympic gold medallist will compete in a strong field in the javelin throw on Thursday, 4th May 2023 at the Qatar Sports Club. He is all set to return to action following his the Diamond League victory last year. India’s Triple jumper Eldhose Paul will also be in action on the day. The 25-year-old Chopra has a busy season ahead with the Asian Games, World Championships and the Paris Olympic qualification all scheduled later this year. He aims to start the long season with a strong performance at the Doha Diamond League. On Friday, he will be playing against the likes of reigning World Champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, Tokyo Olympics Silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic.
Both Anderson Peters and Vadlejch recorded throws of more than 90m at the Doha Diamond League last year. Neeraj is expected to face a similar challenge. The Indian has not gone past the 90m mark ever in his career so far and that is something he aims to breach this year. ” Doha is famous for 90m throws, so really looking forward to a great result,” said a hopeful Neeraj Chopra ahead of his Doha Diamond League debut.
Eldhose Paul to make Diamond League Debut
Triple Jumper Eldhose Paul is all set to make his debut in the Diamond League. Paul won the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in 2022 becoming the first Indian to achieve the feat. The Doha Diamond League has a strong field that has Tokyo Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal, who recorded a personal best of 18.08m, Reigning Diamond League winner Andy Diaz Hernandez (17.07m) of Cuba and two-time Olympic gold winner (2012 and 2016) and five-time world champion Christian Taylor (PB 18.21m) of USA.
Eldhose Paul has a personal best of 16.99m. One of the big targets for Paul is to breach the 17m mark this year. Paul though won the gold in the Commonwealth Games with a wind assisted distance of 17.03m. However it is not his best as it was not considered due to the wind assistance.
What is the Doha Diamond League?
The Doha Diamond League will be the first of the 14 meetings in the Diamond League season this year. Athletes will compete for points in all the meetings that will be held from May to September. The top 8 players in every discipline of sport will then advance to the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene that is scheduled on 16th and 17th September 2023.
