Malaysia Masters 2023: After a month-long break, the action in the BWF Tour is all set to resume. Malaysia Masters, which is a BWF Super 500 event will get underway on Tuesday, 23rd May 2023. World’s top players will get back to action in the tournament following the Sudirman Cup 2023. Viktor Axelsen and Akane Yamaguchi will be the top seeds in the Men’s and Women’s Singles. Anthony Ginting, Lee Zii Jia, Wang Zhi Yi, Ratchanok Intanon will also be the other top players in the tournament. Indians in action
Men’s Singles
Kidambi Srikanth is the only Indian in the first quarter of the draws. The World No.23 will begin his campaign by facing Toma Junior Popov in the first round. If he defeats the Frenchman, in the second round, he is likely to set up clash against either eighth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Kanta Tsuneyama.
Being in the first quarter of the draws, Srikanth is present in the same quarter that has World No.1 Viktor Axelsen
India’s top ranked HS Prannoy is present in the second quarter. The World No.7 however will face a tough challenge in the very first round. He will be taking on sixth seeded Chou Tien Chen. Prannoy recently met the Taiwanese in the Sudirman Cup and lost the contest.
If Prannoy managed to clinch a victory against Chou Tien Chen, he is likely to face either China’s Li Shi Feng or Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the second round. Third seed Jonatan Christie is the only other seeded player in the quarter.
Lakshya Sen is the only other Indian in Men’s Singles. The World No.22 will be up against Seventh seed Loh Kean Yew in the first round. Lakshya lost against the Singaporean much recently in the Badminton Asia Championships and eyes revenge.
Women’s Singles
Saina Nehwal is set to feature in the tournament. She last played in the Orleans Masters last month. Saina is in the first quarter of the draw and will face top seed and World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi. In 13 previous meetings against the Japanese, Saina Nehwal has won only two matches.
PV Sindhu is the other Indian in the Women’s Singles. The sixth seed is in the third quarter of the draw. She faces Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the first round. The other seeded player in the quarter is Ratchanok Intanon and both the players are expected to clash in the quarterfinal.
Men’s Doubles
Fifth seed Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will begin their campaign in the Malaysia Masters by facing England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. The Indian duo are in the second quarter of the draw. They are set to meet fourth seeded Japanese pair Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in the quarterfinal.
Apart from the World No.5 Indian pair none of the other Men’s Doubles players from the country has made a direct entry into the main draw of the tournament.
